Spray tanning is a great way avoid the health risks associated with other forms of tanning. However, whether your tan will result in perfection or disaster has to do with your diligence in following the precautions below. Take some notes ladies...and gentlemen.
Precaution #1: Smooth Surface
Because the mist in spray tanning is so fine, irregularities in the surface of your skin increase the chances of splotching and unevenness. Make sure to exfoliate your body and moisturize each day, starting several days, before your tan.
Another precaution to keep in mind is to get waxed and/or shave before your session. Waxing or shaving removes the outer layers of skin cells and will likely remove your color more quickly.
Precaution #2: Clothing
Keepin in mind that the bronzers in your spray tan can stain fabrics, so wear dark and loose clothing to your session. Bring along a bikini, or old bra and panties, if you aren't comfortable in going au-naturel.
Precaution #3: Things to Avoid
Deodorant, makeup and perfume interfere with the DHA, the coloring used in spray tanning, reaching your skin and can cause missed spots and patchiness. Avoid wearing these before your session.
Precaution #4: Safety
Although DHA is very safe for use cosmetically, breathing in any chemical is not the best of ideas. Make sure your salon gives you glasses and nose clip to help keep you safe.
Make sure you avoid scrubbing in your first shower after your insta-tan session and moisturize continually to preserve your fabulous new tan. If you've had a terrible experience with your first spray tanning session, don't give up. There are plenty of reputable salons who provide exceptional service and leave you looking and feeling great. Ask friends or look at online reviews to find a good salon in your neighborhood.
